As Master on board Ships:
CAPT ADELINO L. MASIGLA
By January of 1974, a chief mate vacancy on board Motor Tanker Cherry
Vinter was offered and my wife and I joined the Cherry Vinter and made
crude oil run from the Middle East ports to various destinations in India
as well as Colombo, Sri Lanka. This tanker was found to be extremely
problematic that no voyage was ever free from mechanical and electrical
breakdown. Very demoralizing indeed. During the last week of May of
1974, we resigned and paid off at the Port of Cochin, India and flew to
Singapore.
By the first week of June 1974, together with my wife, I took command of
MV Selatan Maju, a cargo carrier with heavy lifts and made several
voyages between Singapore and Irian Jaya, Indonesia loaded with
general cargo in both legs of each voyage. During the second week of
December 1974, we disembarked MV Selatan Maju for Christmas
vacation.
By the last week of January of 1975, I, as the Master on board together
with Pilipino crew members joined the Japanese cargo vessel MV
Yamafuku Maru at Kobe, Japan and made one voyage of general cargo
for discharge in Penang, Malaysia then sailed to Pakistan to get a full
load cotton in bulk for delivery to Singapore, Jakarta and Hongkong.
From Hongkong the Yamafuku Maru sailed to Marinduque via Batangas
(June, 1975) to load iron ore. While in Batangas, I disembarked for
vacation. It was at this point that I was offered the position in Lyceum
Merchant Marine Academy as Superintendent and Dean of Marine,
which I accepted. At this juncture I started engaging in maritime
business assisting tankers during mooring/unmooring operations and
named the company-- Batangas Bay Maritime Services.
While with the Marine Academy, I was offered (October 1976) the
position as Port Manager of the Philippine Port Authority that was being
organized in the Port of Batangas. Though the salary was quite low the
position was however accepted on personal agreement with the general
manager that I shall resign after the port is fully organized. My position
with the Philippine Ports Authority had enhanced the visibility of
Batangas Bay Maritime Services.
In June of 1977, I was asked to relieve the Captain of M.T. Sea Shell
One, while on maintenance support to oil rigs and offshore installation
at Brunie Oil Fields. I had the position until the regular captain returned
in October 1977. Upon arrival home I proceed with the management of
Batangas Maritime Services Co Ltd and formally registered the
company with the Security Exchange Commission. This started my
exposure as full time entrepreneur.
Capitalizing on my shipboard experience, I created a demand for a more
professional approach to marine services, built the appropriate boats
and trained offshore personnel as to safety and operations. The
Batangas Bay Maritime Services Co Ltd flourished for over 20 years until
2001 when it was merged with United Ports Marine Services Inc.
